Help us celebrate and discover biodiversity in the Great Lakes region by sharing your nature photography!

The 2022 Sea Grant Great Lakes BioBlitz Youth Photo Contest is part of the 2022 Sea Grant Great Lakes BioBlitz event co-led by Minnesota Sea Grant, Wisconsin Sea Grant and the Center for Great Lakes Literacy.

Ten winners will be chosen. One winner will be chosen for each of the 9 state level BioBlitz projects (i.e., Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario, Canada) and a grand prize winner.

Contest Rules

  • Eligible participants must be 18 years old or younger at the start of the contest on April 22, 2022.
  • Photographs must be taken as part of the 2022 Sea Grant Great Lakes BioBlitz, April 22, 2022 - May 20, 2022.
  • Photographs must be your own.
  • A maximum of five photographs may be submitted per participant.
  • Photographs must be submitted in .jpg format and can be no larger than 1800 (width) x 1200 (height) pixels.
  • Wednesday, May 26, 2022, is the the deadline to enter this contest.

Note: By submitting a photograph(s) to the 2022 Sea Grant Great Lakes BioBlitz Photo Contest, you are giving Minnesota and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs and the Center for Great Lakes Literacy permission to use, repurpose, modify, share, and distribute the photograph(s) for other Sea Grant and CGLL marketing and communication purposes.

iNaturalist Registration Details

  1. Visit www.inaturalist.org on your computer, or download the iNaturalist app from your app store onto your mobile device.
  2. Create an account (free).
  3. Join the Great Lakes regional level project and your state level project.
  4. To join the Great Lakes regional level project navigate to "projects" in iNaturalist and search "2022_Great Lakes BioBlitz-CGLL regional level project." Become a member of this project by selecting the project and clicking the “join” button. 
  5. To join your state level project navigate to "projects" in iNaturalist and search "2022_[your state] Great Lakes BioBlitz-CGLL state level project." Become a member of this project by selecting the project and clicking the "join" button.
  6. Start making observations!

Eligible photograph(s) may be used during the 2023 Sea Grant Great Lakes BioBlitz.

How to Enter the 2022 Sea Grant Great Lakes BioBlitz Youth Photo Contest 

  1. Submit your high resolution photograph/(s) to akmoser@aqua.wisc.edu. Please use the subject line: 2022 Great Lakes BioBlitz Photo Contest Entry.
  2. In the body of the email, please include photographer's name and email. Additional information will be collected via a 2022 Great Lakes BioBlitz Photo Contest form.
  3. Please read, complete and agree to the terms in the 2022 Great Lakes BioBlitz Photo Contest form. This form must be completed for a submission/(s) to be considered eligible for contest entry.
